Samuel has just arrived at the recruiting station in New York City. Joining with the other new recruits he is immediately harassed and made fun of. Sitting down next to him a huge Black recruit put his large fist on the table along with a curt introduction. “My friends call me the 'Hammer'."
With his eyes on Samuel he motioned to the rest of the table.
