We arrived at Hunter’s Point, California, on February 20, 1945. Given liberty passes we headed for San Francisco and the “Frisco Café.”
It was a small dingy bar in the Mission section of San Francisco. It had a long narrow bar on the left and a raised platform on the right, used as a stage for nightly entertainment. It was the local bar for the winos from the Mission District.
We proceeded to oust the locals, lock the door and order drinks. From then on this was our meeting place. The Frisco Café became a Submarine Sailors Only bar. We bought our drinks, but every fifth drink was on the house.
Every weekend we had live entertainment, a sax, drums, and piano. The trio was the back up for the star singer, Elsie. The only way to describe Elsie is, when you looked into her eyes time stood still. In other words, her face would stop a clock. Whenever Elsie sang, it was in the key of B flat. The band played in the key of G sharp. We use to pay Elsie not to sing.

Small book,short story on the USS Aspro but very interesting.
