Helena Stephanovich grew up as a child during world war II in Yugoslavia. The soldiers were very cruel,brutal and intruded upon Helena's soul,mind and body leaving her with dreadful scars from the past that can not leave the inside of her mind.
After the war had ended Helena and her family finally made it out of Yugoslavia leaving Helena's mental state in poor condition. Years of living in glorious freedom in the united states the East Chicago, Indiana's police department reopened homicide cases that lead them to the Stephanovich family
I awake and it is morning. I look down and can see my every breath of air I breathe. It is so cold in here and no warmth comes to me. I think it is safe to set aside the straw from my body. The straw it scratches and tears my skin. Scabs lie upon my surface.
How many more days will I survive the soldiers that come for me in fury and with the rage that so upsets their minds? Their filth they place upon my body as if I were a dog; they run in packs like wolves. Their eyes had madness and so much anger in them that I dare not say a word. Their breath smells like foul food and their bodies reek of sewage. How many more times will my God allow them to intrude my territory?
My mother gave to me one night a silky burgundy scarf and a pair of very dark rim glasses and told me to put them on so that when I walk into town to my father’s house the soldiers wouldn’t recognize me as being a young girl that I am. Mastering a first mystery!
I have to say for a first time author that this author mastered her first mystery! I have to say that in a short novel how from some of the things the character goes through in the war to how she explains in the confession the dreadful past of things that happened in her life and gives us an understanding why the character did some of the things she had done. The newspaper articles confirm some of the events that took place and what a superb way of showing them. By the end of the book how she had worked in a twist or two was also a wonderful way of surprising her readers and ending her story
