In part 2 of The Camp Series, Jessica tells of her biggest fear while visiting the family camp up on the mountain, explaining her emotions and thoughts as the story unfolds.

On the mountain, children are no more safe than adults. Sometimes, a fabled monster turns out to be real. Other times, something completely unexpected will happen. And when your parents do not believe in something, you can't change what happens.

Children learn young to be brave, but that does not mean they are not afraid, wondering if they'll be the next to disappear. The next child the mountain folks search for during the day, and cry for at night.

Excerpt

We were up to camp again. My parents, aunts, uncles and even our grandparents, were up late playing cards and being loud. Nana and Pa have a camp just down the little dirt road. You would've thought we would be able to feel safe with all of the adults around. You would've been be wrong.

They were all out at the big table, drinking and playing cards. I could smell the smoke from the wood stove as I walked out of the bedroom. "What are you doing up?" Dad asked when he noticed me.

"I have to go pee," I said nervously, knowing what was coming next.

"Well, hurry up and then get back into bed." He took his turn at poker.

I walked around the big table, toward the door on the other side. Oil lamps were lit and hanging from the rafter above the long table, but I didn't get to have a light to bring outside with me. The moon would light my way.

I didn't want to walk out there by myself, but I had to. They never wanted to go outside with us older children at night, because they were too busy playing cards and being loud. But I had to pee so bad.

I walked out the first door and closed it behind me. I could see the huge field through the windows that line the enclosed porch of our camp. The field seemed even bigger in the dark, as spread out in front of the camp and off to the right. It was difficult to see the treeline of the woods surrounding the field. I could see the apple trees off to the left, though, and all of the cars in front.

I walked the few steps to the outside door, and saw the outhouse with trees to either side. It was over to the left, near the orchard. I started to get that sinking feeling in my stomach again, and my heart began to race. I knew the feeling well.

I walked out the door and onto the top step, bracing myself. Next, I started to walk slowly toward the outhouse. Is he out here? I knew he was. I could feel him. Is he going to jump out at me? I was so scared. Shivering, I just knew he was going to get me some day. It seemed like such a long walk, but it wasn't. Not really.

As I was getting closer to the outhouse, I become more and more scared. My heart felt like it was going to jump right out of my throat, and I wanted to be safe inside the outhouse, but I just couldn't seem to go any faster. I was just too frightened. I started thinking he was really going to get me this time. That something bad was gonna to happen. That no one would even hear me scream because they were all being so loud back inside the camp.

In the End: Apocalyptic Poetry by Debra Kraft

In the end they'll all be dancin'--all them ones that didn't die.... Dance with me in the shadows amidst the lightning and the thunder, and all that nu-cu-lar debris. See the big bang from the other side, and then open that cellar door. Go down into
