Jessica and her cousins learn that even adults are not safe on the mountain, after something happens to their aunt's boyfriend. Find out what happened in part 3 of The Camp Series, Auntie's Boyfriend.
Sometimes strange things happen on the mountain, like pets disappearing. Or toys. Or even people. No one knows where they go, just that they are gone. Or, at least, that is what the groewnups tell the children.
What if the grownups know more than what they are letting on? What if they know where all the missing things and people are, but just wont say? What if they don't?
After all, it isn't just children the denizens of the dark take. It can be anyone. Even adults who no longer believe.
Excerpt
Auntie's boyfriend disappeared. No one knows where he went. Was he lost in the woods? Had he gone further up the mountain? Who knew? He hasn’t called her in a whole week, and she's so upset. I hadn’t seen Auntie cry before, and I didn’t like it. She and the rest of the adults looked for him all week, taking turns watching us kids.
We aren't usually watched so closely. Those who watched us during the day wouldn't let us out of their site. And at night, someone went to the outhouse with us whenever we had to go. Thank goodness, because we were all so scared. More than ever now that Auntie's boyfriend was missing.
Carl asked me and Jenny and Alex to play outside with him one day, but he didn’t really want to play. He wanted us to go with him to talk to Aunt Carol. She wasn’t much older than us, and liked to talk to us sometimes. We found her walking through the apple orchard.
Running up to her, we all called “Hi, Aunt Carol!” “Oh, hi,” she'd said, plucking an apple from a tree. “Grab an apple and let’s go for a walk.”
We walked with her for a while, until we were a good ways from the camp. “Boy,” said Alex. “Auntie sure is upset.”
“Yes, she is,” Aunt Carol replied, frowning. “I guess I would be, too.”
“Yeah,” Carl agreed. “Do you s’pose the Boogie Man got him?”
“I’m sure he did,” Aunt Carol had said in a knowing tone.
“How do you know?” I asked.
“‘Cause I heard him when he went out to the outhouse that night.”
“You did?”
“Yeah. He and your Auntie had just come in from a walk, and he went back out ‘cause he had to go. I was up in my loft, and I heard him close both of the doors to the camp when he left.” She was staring off into the woods, having stopped so we could all pick some berries in the field.
“Did you see him?” Alex asked, as we all stood, berries in hand.
