The book is set in Fergus, Ontario c1904 and tells the story of a child born into the County Poor House
Anna: A Child of the Poor House begins in 1885 after a woman is signed into the County Poor House and a child is born to her. The mother dies and the child is raised by several inmates before she is bound out to a family in Toronto. Twenty years later, Anna, returns to the area to find out more about her birth mother. While searching for answers Anna rubs shoulders with the village's unusual characters, finds her roots and falls in love.
