The book pivots around the lives of several people and how being stationed on a Fleet Ballistic Missile submarine affects them and the women they love. The book gives intimate details of events that happened at sea, on leave, on shore and what happens to the people they leave behind. Sex, anger, laughter, happiness, danger, fun and even love finds its way through the pages of Blue and Gold, told by a person who experienced them first hand. Other books talk about the strict military procedures and the equipment associated with being on submarines. This book focuses more on the people. Things hardly every happen the way the Navy would like you to think they do. Life on a submarine is all about real life and not regulations. Inside are actual excerpts and articles from the Ship’s newspaper, copied word for word as they appeared, including all the typos and errors. The journal entries in the book are actual entries from the author’s journal, as they appeared. No grammatical corrections were made on these entries and articles.

The Gold Crew’s Engineering Department prepared for their first Operational Reactor Safety Exam at the end of the patrol. As the patrol came to its conclusion, drills became an every-watch event. On top of the training, the Engineering Department made sure to update all of their documentation with current revisions. The ORSE team placed just as much importance on correct documentation as on the way the men ran the equipment. They also tested the men orally on their knowledge about the various systems and how they worked.
A couple of days before pulling in, Brett once again tiptoed into the Engineer’s stateroom to replace the stamp with the one he took at the beginning of the patrol. With an evil grin, he confidently walked out.
A day before pulling into Rota, the Francis Scott Key surfaced to allow the ORSE team members onboard. An ORSE always gave Nucs the jitters. They hoped not to mess up in any way because that would reflect badly on them. No one wanted to get in trouble on an ORSE.
The Nucs of the Gold Crew impressed the ORSE team with their extensive knowledge and ability to respond in various emergencies. It appeared the crew would receive high marks on the exam. The ORSE team only needed to examine the documentation.
“I have to tell you, Mr. Emerson, the Key’s Gold Crew Engineering Department looks rather impressive,” Commander Willis remarked. He began thumbing through the Engineering Night Orders. “That reactor scram drill went as smoothly as I’ve seen in months. Petty Officer Pierson is a real wiz. In fact . . .” He stopped, staring at a page in the ENOs. “What’s this?”
“What?” asked the Engineer.
“This you have stamped on the page.”
“It’s ‘Confidential’.” Mr. Emerson seemed puzzled.
“Look at it again. There’s an extra letter in the word.”
The Engineer stared for a second, then he saw. Brett had replaced the “CONFIDENTIAL” stamp with one that read “CORNFIDENTIAL.” Mr. Emerson used the stamp for over two months, several times each day, without ever noticing. Because of it, the Gold Crew received low marks in the documentation portion of ORSE. LCDR Emerson vowed to find out who perpetrated the deed, but never did.
Once he reached Rota, Brett pitched the stamp in a base trashcan to get rid of the evidence.
