This is a story of lost love set in the world of radio, and takes us to various countries in Europe, including a spell on the North Sea.
Dave Buckingham, a DJ on a small radio station in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, is feeling very disillusioned with his life. On his midnight show, every record he plays reminds him of Katharina, his Austrian sweetheart, who he lost touch with 19 years ago when they were both working on an offshore radio station on the North Sea. As his programme progresses, his memory works overtime, and then the most extraordinary sequence of events unfolds.
Dave Buckingham, a DJ on a small local commercial radio station, Strathdee FM, in deepest Aberdeenshire, Scotland, is on-air on the midnight show.
Approaching 41 and feeling very disenchanted with his life, and the very little that he has to show for it so far, he contemplates chucking the job in and heading off to Vienna to search for the love of his life - a girl he knew 19 years ago and who he lost touch with while they were both working on a ship-based radio station on the North Sea.
Every record he plays on his programme on this hot August night reminds him of Katharina, his Austrian sweetheart, and he keeps drifting back to the good times they had. We also hear of the bad times that Katharina went through, from the death of her father to almost dying herself at the hands of professional bounty hunters who kidnap her, trying to locate her former boss, Frank Bentley, who has fled to Spain after his offshore radio station suffers catastrophic financial failure. Dave has to jump ship at night as the vessel is going to be impounded in the morning, and he flees with one of the other DJs in a rubber boat to England. Frank flees to a friend's villa in Spain, and after a few months he contacts Dave with an attractive offer to run the Aberdeenshire radio station he has just inadvertently bought as part of a rescue deal put together by his crooked friend Ronnie Marsh, who he turns to for help. The deal from Ronnie also includes Frank marrying a Russian girl to get her into the UK.
The story contains love scenes, a seduction scene and two 'love children'. Then, it all kicks off towards the end of his show when the studio phone rings, and after three abortive attempts to get through, Katharina is at the other end and he suddenly realises that she is only 30 miles away, and he is going to see her after 19 years - and see his 19 year old daughter for the first time. An emotional reunion takes place at Aberdeen Harbour at 2:30 in the morning between himself, Katharina and their daughter Anna, and from that point on, his life completely turns around.
Dave also has an 18 year old son, Duncan, (described by him as a 'conception of convenience') to a local woman; the lovely Tammy who runs Tammy's Truck Stop just outside the village of Strathdee, and the half brother and sister eventually meet in a strange situation.
Many of the characters' emotions are explored in this heart-warming story, including an inherited disability which Katharina suffers from, and how she copes with it and sometimes doesn't. And has she passed it on to her daughter?
This fast-paced tale takes us to Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Holland, the North Sea, Spain, England, and finally Scotland where the story ends in the idyllic Royal Deeside area of Aberdeenshire - with a gripping twist in its tail!
