This is a memoir of a woman with bipolar disorder who had the disorder her enitire life but was not diagosed until middle age. Finally she finds out why she has so much difficulty with her life and treatment begins. Unfortunately, it takes her years to find medication which works for her and she continues to lose jobs and destroy relationiships.
Finally she is given the right combination of meds and her life begins to turn around. For the first time she feels "Normal" and is able to work and live peacefully.
Excerpt
It was a big night at our house because my oldest sister was getting married. She was the first to leave the nest, and would be marrying in a simple church wedding the next morning. We had been planning for weeks and the big day was finally here. The house was cleaned and polished and full of guests. All four of the girls were in my big sister’s bedroom, trying on pink dresses with American rose sashes, checking on hairstyles, and just generally having a giggling good time. We were all excited; this was unprecedented in our lives. Suddenly, without knocking, my father opened the door and stuck his head in. He had a last word for my sister. He didn’t want to wish her well or give her a last piece of advice. He just said, “I’ll be glad when you’re gone. You are the one who causes all the problems around here.” Then he left. Our party over, we slunk off while my sister had her cry. It was typical of my father; he was not the center of attention and the wedding had upset his life, so he took his hurt feelings out on the person he perceived to be the cause.

A very candid account
This author's struggle to be diagnosed with bipolar disorder comes through very clearly in this narrative. I enjoyed this book very much, aside from some minor editorial mistakes. I appreciate how candid the author is about her difficulties in her jobs and relationships. I almost wanted to celebrate with her when she finally found a doctor who could properly diagnose her and give her the proper medical care she had sought for many years.
Wonderful Gem
This is an excellent book. It fills a need for sufferers of bipolar disorder and their families to hear the personal stories of others. It is also eye opening for those not familiar with the disease. It offers a wonderful narrative of the interior experience of the illness. It is concise and to the point, no nonsense, yet also delightfully witty. I recommend it.
witty and brave
As a fellow sufferer with bipolar disorder this book was particularly poignant for me. It was an insightful and humorous journey through one woman's brave fight against a difficult disease that is frequently the source of prejudice. For those of us who also suffer from this disease this book was a breath of hope in what can sometimes feel like an endless and hopeless battle. It is also a beautiful and courageous testament to a life lived with fortitude and humor despite the challenges of living with bipolar. Bravo Jane.

The excerpt sounds like a really good book... I could identify with the example of the father. People tend to think bipolar people want attention but I think it is the anxiety of events and changes in their lives. We can't always think logically and say very hurtful things that we often regret. Much success with your book.
