“You know when Mother used her magic, I remember as boy being frightened when the sky would turn black, the moon would seem brighter with an extraterrestrial glow.” Elijah nervously paced. “I used to look up at the sky and think the man in the moon was laughing at us, poking fun at the immortal children, the unloved race.”
“Is that really how you saw us as children?”
“I saw us as the damned,” Elijah said. “I’m not sure I ever saw us as anything more.”
“And now?”
“And now I think we’re both on the verge of finding happiness and yet what happens, another outsider rushes in and tries to strip us of that happiness before we can hold it in our clasped hands, before we have the opportunity to really understand the magnitude of happiness, perhaps its texture and volume, the way it perhaps balances or grounds our very family.”
“You’re in love with Elena.” He had long since suspected as much.
“Like you, Niklaus, I don’t give my love away freely. Perhaps I see Elena as available now. She did, after all, have Damon erased from her mind which speaks to me in a way I hadn’t expected.
“Perhaps she loved Damon, but even in spite of that love, she took hold of an opportunity, a chance she might never have again if Damon hadn’t ended up on the other side.”
“She wanted him wiped from her memory because she couldn’t bear the pain.” Klaus felt it was imperative to clarify in case his brother had misconstrued information. “She was in pain.”
“I understand her pain. I’ve witnessed it.” He turned away from Klaus then and stared up at the skies. “Damon and Elena had a chance at love, happiness, and perhaps they would have a same or similar chance again if he returned from the other side to find her waiting for him.”
“But you’re going to make sure that doesn’t happen?”
“I don’t have to do anything, brother. She was smart enough to do that herself.”
“She will always go back to him.” Klaus had seen the two of them together. She could wipe Damon from her memory all she wanted. He would never stop pursuing her. “And the one thing he has is the one thing you don’t. He knows what it took to win her over the first time. When he comes back from the other side, it may take some time, but he will never stop until he has Elena in his arms again.”
EXCERPT TWO
“You’re delusional.” Sniffling, Rebekah swiped at her damp cheeks and kept her head down. She rummaged through her dressing table. “I try to understand you, Nik, but you look for every opportunity to hurt me. You’re not happy unless I’m unhappy.”
“Is that really how you see me?” Klaus gave her a minute to pull herself together before he entered her room. His sister had always been a hopeless romantic. Surely, if anyone understood his reasons for leaving New Orleans, she would.
Rebekah faced him. “Why are you here? I would’ve thought you were halfway to Caroline by now.”
“I don’t have the right to ask for favors…”
“But you will anyway. What is it, Nik? Something to do with Elijah no doubt or you would’ve asked him for the favor.”
“I don’t think Elijah can help me with this.”
Rebekah immediately straightened her shoulders. Down deep, his sister longed for his approval. Maybe if Klaus sought her advice in this important matter, Rebekah would see how much he cared for her. Klaus actually valued her opinions in matters of the heart.
“How can I be of service to the original hybrid?”
He chuckled at her quick change in demeanor and then considered how he wanted to pose his question. “Sister, when you fancy someone, how do you want them to pursue you?”
“You’re asking me this?”
“Yes.” And then he remembered why he seldom asked for anything. A man who asked a woman—sister or not—for advice on how to court someone of interest, should’ve felt inferior. He thinned his lips and thought about fleeing. After a quiet moment, he mumbled, “This was a bad idea.”
“Wait.” Rebekah met him at the door. “Do you love her?”
“According to you and Elijah that seems to be the problem here, yes.”
“Nik, it isn’t a problem but viewing love in that light could be. You can’t love or be loved if you’re only interested in holding it over someone’s head. Caroline is strong and independent. That’s why you’re in love with her.
“You don’t intimidate her. She stands up to you in defiance or sides with you when the world is against you. You admire her and perhaps she is the only woman you have ever respected. You’re in love with her, but if you’re only going to help her in hopes that she’ll later feel indebted to you then you are wasting your time.”
“You took the scenic route, sister. Now, if you would be so kind to answer the question. How do you like to be pursued?”
