Chapter one
The first encounter
I was having one of those days; nothing was going right. The sights on this confounded gun were impossible to set. Trying to get it to focus on a target was beyond my intelligence. I yanked the phone from my jacket pocket and called Dave’s name out loud in frustration as the auto dialler repeated the number to make sure it had heard me correctly.
"Yes!" I shouted in anger, as it carried out my command.
"Your number is dialled and has been connected."
I looked at the sights on the weapon and snarled at its pathetic design. Dave’s voice answered.
"Yeah, hello Al, what's up?"
"It's this damn gun sight sensor thing. It’s useless."
"Have you tried pressing the tazor button and releasing the locking mechanism?"
"Say what!" I yelled back at the handpiece.
"Have you done what I have just told you?"
"Well no..., I thought it would just work as it should."
There was a pause on the line as he took a deep breath.
"Al, why don't you listen when I tell you about these things? You know how serious this could get if you are in a tight situation and you forget the sequence. You will be dead before you can take a second breath."
I realised I was being an idiot not to listen to the instructions, but I thought it was easier than it looked. This new weapon I held in my hand was so way out that it was scary.
"Al, are you there?"
"Sorry, I was just thinking of the consequences."
"Yeah, well, think long and hard. I can't mention what we talked about, but you know exactly what you're up against."
"Okay, I'll read the instructions," I shouted at the handpiece and clicked off the phone.
I began to realise that this was going to be a lot different than I had imagined. Was the thing, or whatever it was, really that lethal, or was it just fabricated lies to make me destroy it. Still there was something that kept haunting me in the back of my mind. Was this thing real or imaginary, a figment of their imagination? The top-secret dossier was locked away in the safe in my house. I had read it twice and still didn't really know what it was all about. The gun was so way out that I wondered if it was capable of anything. The sensors on it were developed by Dave. He was brilliant at electronics. According to him this thing we were hunting gave off some sort of radiation. His sights would home in on the radiation and pin-point the target. All I had to do was press the trigger. It sounded simple. It probably was. All I had to do was try it. It was weird how these things, alien beings, had been travelling through space and arrived at the Earth. So far all we know about them is that they move in such a fashion that mere mortals are in extra-slow motion compared with their speed. Well, that didn't quite describe the movements of the thing. It was scary to think another alien life form had actually landed on Earth. So here I was stuffing around like a chook without a head, trying to use the latest weapon.
