Rachel lit a candle inside her wagon and stripped the filthy shirt and jeans from her body. Her bra and panties were not much cleaner and, after countless washings already, she wondered fleetingly how much longer the few sets of underwear she possessed would last. She doffed the undergarments also, in favor of a flannel nightgown she found weeks earlier among Clara's belongings. She laid the nightgown aside for the time being, then wet a cloth in a basin of water and vigorously scrubbed her face before moving on to her slender arms and other attributes.
A creak on the back step of the small conestoga caused her to pause, then a shadow at the opening in the canvas top prompted her to snatch up the nightgown. She held it against the front of her naked body as her eyes widened in alarm.
She gasped when Luke stooped to enter through the low opening. He pulled the kerchief from over his mouth and nose and allowed his warming gaze to scan her meagerly-clad form.
"I'm staying the night, whether you like it or not."
Rachel's eyes darkened with a passion that matched his and, slowly, the nightgown slipped to the floor of the wagon. She held out the washcloth. "I think you need this worse than I do."
