This is certainly the church in America today. Just as Laodicea was the banking center of Asia Minor, America has become the banking center of the world and has fallen into the same apostasy as Laodicea, which is said to be “wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked” when it thinks it is “rich, increased with goods and in need of nothing.” Unfortunately, at present, millions are out of work, food prices are higher than ever, crime is on the increase, and half of civilization is living off of government handouts. Society is blind because the churches are blind. Churches must wake up and throw off the mantel of lukewarmness. Otherwise, great judgment may be on its way to America.
Another important matter that needs to be studied, discussed, and understood is the rapture. Pre-tribulation rapture is commonly thought to be the next event in prophecy, and many have thought that the church would not be here for any of the events of the Book of Revelation. People with this view are typically unaware that there are other opinions on the rapture timing, or how a post-tribulation rapture literally fits the natural sequential timeline of Revelation much more than any other belief.
What about the prophecy writers and movies such as the Left Behind series by Tim LaHaye which claim to interpret prophecy in a literal manner? Carefully look at those things and notice that they invariably deviate from the literal interpretation. For example, the argument for the pre-tribulation timing of the rapture, depicted in his book and movie, is based on typology (types and shadows) plus allegories. In fact, pre-tribulation rapture proponents lack even one literal verse for their position.
A principle known as Lex parsimoniae will guide this journey into the Book of Revelation. In the literal interpretation, we will lean upon what is known as “Occam’s razor,” a principle of problem-solving which states that among competing hypotheses, the one with the fewest assumptions should be selected.
