This is a difficult review to write. Firstly, CONCLUSIONS: Pragmatic Realities impressed me so deeply that it will be a challenge to write about it and do it justice. I will do my best. Secondly, my enthusiasm for this book, I’m afraid, will not be shared by all readers. You see, if you hold a stone or any other material object in your hand and you are absolutely and unquestionably convinced that the object in your hand is solid—i.e. that solidity is the only possible reality associated with the object—then you may be faced with a huge challenge. If, however, you have asked yourself at one time or another question such as—What is reality? Is reality really what we perceive it to be? What is time? What is consciousness? What did Einstein mean when he said that the way we perceive time and reality are illusions? And what did Jesus mean when he said, the “Kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17:21 et alii)—then, if such questions have already entered your mind, you may find it hard to put this book down.
This book offers answers to such and similar metaphysical questions. And in this context, the author challenges scientific and religious views. And most impressively, the author’s explanations and thoughts make sense both from a logical and spiritual perspective. You can’t expect more from a book of that genre. But there is more! Stanisław Kapuściński presents his conclusions with a clarity that leaves no doubt about what he means.
In addition, it is a joy to read this book.
Again and again, I was surprised by the dry, sharp—and yet, unassuming—sense of humour Kapuściński managed to insert throughout the book. I have read quite a few of his books and this was something new to me. A pleasant surprise on top of all else.
The tone in the second half of the book changes somewhat. You could say, the author addresses the practicalities of his conclusions. This is not less interesting and not less challenging. The topics are death, good and evil and where our world is heading to. This is all addressed in the context of the answers offered to the big questions in the first half of the book. There are also extracts and references to other books by Stanisław Kapuściński, which readers may find valuable. He is an author, once you have read one of his books, you will read a second, third… one. CONCLUSIONS: Pragmatic Realities is one of those rare books which you carry with you in your mind for a long time to come.
