As she stood looking out at the mountains in the distance, a brisk wind brushed her cheek reminding her that it was still the middle of winter. It was one of those perfect sunlit days in early January in Colorado. A respite from the brutal cold to come before spring finally arrived. She stood for a long time soaking up the scene.
The sun was starting to sink behind the mountains. Soon all you would be able to see is the stark silhouette of the mountain peaks against the intense blue of the sky. She wished she could stay in this moment.
A voice in the distance snapped her back to reality. She could hear it coming closer. It was her mom calling her.
Oh, well, she needed to get back and finish packing. They would be leaving in the morning. She hated the thought; she didn’t want to leave this place. It was so beautiful and peaceful here, not like back there.
"I don’t want to go back," she thought. "I don’t!"
It had been so wonderful coming up here, almost like nothing had changed. But everything had changed; nothing would ever be the same again.
She felt something warm on her cheek and realized it was a tear. She started walking back to the house. As she walked, the snow crunched under her feet. The sun had melted the top layer of snow, forming a thin crust that made a crunching sound as she took each step. She could feel a definite bite in the wind now as the sun sank lower in the sky. She picked up her pace; she could hear her Mother calling more insistently.
A movement ahead of her caught her attention. She stopped and stood still for a minute, listening and looking in the direction it had come from. She didn’t see anything. "Oh well," she thought to herself. It must have been some snow falling off the branch of a tree.
She trudged on through the deep snow, and up the slope ahead of her. There it was again! A cracking sound in a clump of bushes.
"It’s probably a rabbit or something," she thought, "or it could be a mountain lion." At that thought she started moving faster up the hill.
