To complicate matters, Dughall claims the sword of Red Conan and inherits the curse that comes with it. Challenged by real and supernatural enemies, he must fight to continue his line. Conflicts pit brother against brother and father against son. The National Covenant is signed and war breaks out. Tempers run hot and actions are rash. To maintain order, one brother must take Blackheart’s place. Which raises the question… Who shall become the Dark Lord?

In Dark Lord, we continue on the journey with characters we've loved from Dark Birthright. Now older, with families, the clan meets difficulty as historical events and religious prosecution threaten to tear apart the country and pit family members against each other. Dark Lord delivers a suspenseful, fast-paced read. Like Dark Birthright, Dark Lord is beautifully illustrated and perfect reading for long nights and lazy afternoons.

When I received my copy of Dark Lord, I re-read Dark Birthright and then Dark Lord right after. Ms. Treat has continued her feat of presenting complex issues and complex people with sharp prose that does not condescend to the reader and offers frequent moments of grace. One paragraph hit me as descriptive of her style. It is from Chapter 41, "Meeting of Minds," page 285. It has the protagonist, Dughall, headed for a meeting, fraught with anxiety.
"Lightning neighted nervously as they approached a fork in the trail. The horse was restless, reflecting the mood of his rider. Dughall patted his neck. He recognized the signs of a worried horse; ears flicking back and forth and roving eyes. Before long the animal would be breaking a sweat. He took a breath and released it slowly. Perhaps if he lowered his energy, the horse would calm as well. It worked. Lighting took a sympathetic breath and let it out audibly through his nostrils. It sounded like a sigh."
Forthright and touched with poetry. I love it!
If you love historic novels that thoroughly examine their characters and don't flinch from the realities of their age, Dark Birthright and Dark Lord will stick in your head for a long time and will always be worthy of re-reads.

As a historical fiction fan and Scottish history buff, I was very thrilled in reading this book. I enjoyed Dark Birthright, but found Ms. Treat to surpass all my expectations on this new installment. I attempted to savor each chapter, but found myself unable to put this book down. Both of her books give the reader a rare glimpse of 17th Century Scotland and it is very apparent that she spent an enormous amount of time researching her topics. Ms. Treat is very gifted in weaving this breathtaking story. This is a guaranteed page turner! I cannot wait for the release of her next installment! Well done!
