There was a soldier from the 45th Infantry Division who became intoxicated and pass out. His buddies thought it would be funny to put him in the back of a deuce and a half and secure the canvas cover. The trucks were used for troop or supply transport. Whent he man came to, he panicked and "rose hell" trying to get out of the truck bed. Two 10th Corps MPs heard the racket and pulled him out. Apparently the infantryman didn't show the proper amount of respect and was beaten for the mistake. Some of the man's buddies fromt the 45th found the two military policemen and "beat the shit out of them." They then tied cement blocks to the two cops and threw them off the Fitzroy bridge in north Rockhampton into the Fitzroy River. Brotherhood is not something taken lightly by the dog faces who must dodge the bullets and lie in oozing mud in order to survive day in and day out.

My dad was a medic in New Guinea and and the Philippines during WWII. The average life span of a medic in the PTO, was 6 weeks. My dad survived for 6 MONTHS, when they finally pulled off the line. He never spoke about his experience as a medic. As I have looked for ways to come to better understand him, this the only book I have found that tells the story of Pacific. Wish I could write more, but it's the next book I read...
