Hard Knock Life
Lakisha N. Smith has written a gritty story of one woman's search for love and all the men she encounters before she finds the one. Her main character suffers so much harm, emotionally and physically, it is a wonder she was able to survive. The portrayal of the hustling game and life in the inner city was enthralling at times and at other times sad. Readers will empathize with Ieesha and her struggle to live in an environment that holds little hope of survival or success. There are many characters in this story, who add to the authenticity of urban life. The pace was fast up until near the end. I do commend the author for giving us a realistic portrayal of urban life and not glamorizing it by showing the consequences of living in this manner. Readers will leave with a lesson learned and a cultural awareness, which make this novel well worth reading.
