The mood on the set thickened and turned ugly. If Steve didn't like the new pages at all, he wouldn't come out of his big motor home, which was parked near the track. He would send out word he was sick. One day, as if to prove his illness, he staggered out looking grey as a slab of limestone. The crew, most of whom had read Forsyth's The Day of the Jackal, accused him of chewing cordite to change his complexion. Incredible as it sounds, Steve once roared out of his cabana and towed Lee across the set with a firm grasp on his trademark necktie, yelling for the entire assembled cast ancd crew to hear that he, Steve McQueen would kiss Lee's ass in a window of Macy's department store in Manhattan if the footage of him would be turning out right, but it just-wasn't-turning-out-RIGHT!! Much to Lee's credit (or discredit, depending on how you think about such matters) he hung in there. Without his tenacity, Le Mans would never have been completed. But none of it came easy.
