Claudius scanned the body carefully as the medics removed it from the dumpster. The only wound was on the neck. It was the same as on Francine’s and he looked over at Rebecca who seemed to be taking it well considering what she’d been through. He had to ask her about this, what she knew and thought might have happened. All he knew was that this had Victors’ name written all over it. He approached her.
“Rebecca, do you mind if I ask you a few questions?”
He could see a fire in her eyes that made him feel uneasy, something he hadn’t felt in about a century. From that look, he knew he must tread carefully.
“Why? If I don’t you’re going to eavesdrop on my conversations, tread in my friends’ flowers or threaten me? Please tell me so I know why I’m going to tell you to get lost.”
All thought escaped from his mind as he stared. His attempt to seem nonchalant the other day had just backfired in his face. From the very beginning, she’d had his attention but he had to keep a great distance from her. After all, not being able to read her fully was evidence of the danger she posed, not only to his kind, but to him as well. He decided to proceed with caution.
“Do you know what happened to this woman?”
“No, I just found her there. It was just as much an unwelcome surprise as you.”
He bit his tongue. Her words were like a knife that cut through the flesh. He tightened his jaw a moment then continued.
“Where were you at the time of the murder?”
“I don’t know, sleeping maybe. I pretty much just found her”
“Do you have any idea what may have happened?”
Something flickered in her eyes for a split second and he couldn’t be sure what. Was it sadness, maybe guilt?
“Yeah, your friend from the other night. Tell me something. Do you tell him to follow people around just so you can save them and make yourself look good?”
He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Is this who the Supreme Being wanted him to save? Several words passed through his mind, none of which was pleasant. He couldn’t help himself. Normally nobody could get a rise from him but this woman didn’t hold back and was in need of an attitude adjustment and he was just the one to give it to her.
“Tell me. Do you normally walk alone in the middle of the night because you’re brave or are you trying to find some customers?” He knew this was a low blow but someone had to put her in her place.
