Summer temperatures usually arrived at Denali Air Station Recruit Camp in Alyeska long before daylight became its constant companion. Eighteen-year old Kallen Jahn Deshara arrived on Friday evening, exactly one week after graduating from high school. This was the first time he’d been this far away from his hometown and he was both excited and anxious. He was toward the back of the hoverbus that held sixty-four other eighteen and nineteen-year old boys. After the ten kilometer ride from the hoverport to the recruit camp, he had his toes stepped on multiple times as everyone dashed out the door to the designated area in front of the gate.
Immediately, their ears were assaulted by yelling drill instructors. “Don’t look at me!” “Keep your mouth shut!” “Stand up straight!” The routine heard by recruits for centuries.
Kallen stood in line, his sandy brown hair noticeable because of the blond ends waving in the warm breeze. His 1.83 meter frame stood as much to attention as he could muster. His lean seventy-four kilo weight completely motionless. Despite the commotion that threatened to break his concentration at any second, his deep green eyes were fixed on the dead center of the back of the head of the boy in front of him.
The view surrounding the recruit station was breathtaking. The mountains here were higher and far more rugged than the ones that graced the skyline back home. The temperature was wonderful, too, almost chilly in comparison to what he was used to this time of year. But what was most surprising was that he saw dozens and dozens of topside buildings, and people walking around like they didn’t have a care in the world! He wasn’t prepared to see everything designed to be completely topside. Already it looked like his life would be quite a bit different for a while.
Tiago Sandoval, 1.92 meters tall, a lean eighty-two kilos, coffee-brown skin, black hair, and dark brown eyes, was from the Oregon Domain. He had lived his entire life some three hundred kilometers west of New Meadows. The two had never met before. He stood directly behind Kallen, his eyes focused directly at the center of the back of Kallen’s head, trying to look as innocent as possible and trying to keep from being yelled at. It wasn’t working. Drill instructors know that an innocent look means nothing.
Eventually, they were ushered through the gates and soon enough their three-month training began.
Tiago, with his thick shiny dark hair, his green-tinged brown eyes, and light-brown complexion enamored Kallen more than any boy he’d ever met before. Kallen’s hometown was an almost homogeneous mix of northern European cultures, of which Kallen’s family was no exception. Tiago, on the other hand, was totally different, since he had Central American roots. Within a week Kallen and Tiago became buddies.
Eighteen years of age like Kallen, Tiago had a certain mystery about him that, at first, Kallen was unable to properly define. But, like himself, Tiago was there because he had to be. It was the law. Everyone knew that at eighteen or nineteen they would be serving at least five years in the National Ground Patrol, the Air Defense Force, or the Coastal Marine Observers. Later, some would even opt to join the Black Guard.
As the weeks passed, Kallen became mesmerized with Tiago’s ability to concentrate on the tasks put to him, his easy-going nature, his unbelievable smile, and with something he didn’t want to admit at first: his fascination with Tiago’s gorgeous body. No one else in his entire platoon came even close to Tiago in that respect. Just being near him made Kallen feel emotion about to burst out of his chest.
It wasn’t until his second month in boot camp that Kallen finally admitted he was gay. Up until that time he thought his secret fascination for males was an odd quirk. It was because of Tiago that he came to terms with what he’d been suppressing all this time. Alone on night watch gave one time to think. Kallen’s turn came around every eighth day. It was during his fifth rotation that he let himself be overwhelmed with the fact that he was totally sexually attracted to Tiago.
Before, when he let the feelings come up, he had always carefully, calmly, and deliberately suppressed them. He noticed that here in boot camp he couldn’t suppress them at all–despite the rumor that some sort of chemical had been put in their food to keep them from getting aroused. It certainly wasn’t working on him.
