When a child has to face a subject like cancer, there are likely to be questions. A lot of questions.
In this book, Mary Jo Prado tackles the subject in the simple, matter-of-fact way that has come to be expected from her books ... Susie is sitting on her Grandma's knee. She is safe and loved - and she asks her questions.
What is cancer? What will happen? How will they fix Mommy? Will she puke? What else will happen?
Dealing with any subject is made easier when you can use a book to help to explain or start a discussion. Sometimes it can be difficult to find the right tone to explain what is happening. In 'Grandma, What is Cancer?', the scary subject of Cancer is made simple to understand. In my experience, when something is understood it loses its edge - and becomes much easier to deal with. I think this book would be indispensable when faced with cancer in the family.

Susie finds out her mommy has cancer. Susie is not sure what that means exactly so she goes to her grandmother to seek out the answer. Susie asks her grandmother a few questions about cancer such as what it is; does it make a person sick; will the person die? Her grandmother does her best to answer all of Susie's questions in a calm and comforting way. Will Susie be able to understand what her mom is going through, and will she be able to help her at all?
Grandma, What's Cancer? written and illustrated by Mary Jo Prado is a unique children's pictorial book introducing young readers to the concept of cancer. Through the author's own personal experiences with the story's subject - cancer - she has written a light-hearted, compassionate book to help young children comprehend what their loved ones might have to go through when they have been diagnosed with cancer. The author turns a very scary, uncomfortable subject into a way to have a comprehensible, comfortable conversation with a young child to ensure they are fully knowledgeable and mentally ready for what their loved one will go through. Susie asks her grandmother questions that most children would want to know when faced with the subject. Each answer provided is carefully expressed in a calm and comforting manner, so as not to frighten young readers, but make them aware. The book touched my heart greatly, and will touch those of readers who know anyone who has experienced the word 'cancer' in any way.
