Sir Licksalot and The Bay Fools is a preteen and children’s fantasy book written by D.L. Carroll and illustrated by Teri Cuneo. Blaze and his friends have figured out a way to travel through a fountain in Blaze’s backyard. When they’re gone, time stops so they can have fun adventures without anyone else knowing about it. They've promised the girls that they can come along on the next adventure, but no one wants it to be really hot or really, really cold, like some previous ones. The seven kids and Sir Licksalot go to the fountain where they are soon surrounded by bubbles that will take them on their trip. Bobby and Sir Licksalot went in last so they are separated from the rest and land in a different place. It’s foggy where Blaze and the rest are and no one can see where they are. Then they realize they’re on the walkway of a bridge, and they follow it into a park. Meanwhile, Bobby and Sir Licksalot are on an island where birds are nesting and there’s a spooky deserted prison.

D.L. Carroll’s adventure fantasy for preteens and children, Sir Licksalot and The Bay Fools, is silly and goofy and a lot of fun. I loved reading about the kids’ adventures in the city by the Bay, which is a foggy and chilly place indeed. Cuneo’s illustrations are clever, especially her rendering of Lombard Street, which is notoriously hard to get right in a drawing. Those who are familiar with the sights and sounds of San Francisco will smile in recognition as they follow Blaze and his friends in their wandering, and those who aren’t will probably want to visit there after reading this book. And while I’ve never actually taken that boat ride across the bay to visit Alcatraz, Bobby and Sir Licksalot’s adventures on that rather desolate island felt almost like being there myself. Sir Licksalot and The Bay Fools is highly recommended for armchair adventurers of all ages. It’s great fun.

This is such a great adventure. Bobby and his sister along with their friends and of course the dog, Sir Licksalot are ready to enjoy the summer. Despite the fact that mom hires a babysitter, the group still has the magic fountain where all their adventures and travel begin. The Bay of Fools adventure finds them separated in the bubble fog and experiencing San Francisco..... who lands in Alcatraz and who of the group has fun at Pier 39?


The reader is carried on a fun and mysterious trail riding the famous cable cars of San Francisco along with visiting the famous chocolate factory where Ghiradelli chocolate is made. The mystery of the famous prison on Alcatraz island is explored and there is even a circus. The reader is never bored on this adventure and D. L. Carroll does a fabulous job of engaging the reader from the very first page.


This is just one of the books in a series where the friends and Sir Licksalot travel through the magic of the fountain to explore real places. The author weaves history and fun facts throughout the text to keep even reluctant readers interested. This would make a great addition to any classroom or home book collection and kids will love following the same characters on every adventure.
