Stendo, the Depression
by Stephen L. Webb

Authors Den

Category:  Action/Thriller

This is the first story within the Generation series. It is about a boy in another Universe, known as the Etroverse. This young man is enjoying his life until one day a ransom is found to forever change the course of his destiny.

Chapter 1: A Ransom And
A Dream

A few years ago, deep in the Etroverse, on a planet called Etro-Earth, in the city of Sorona, EtroKane, there lived a young man named Steve Amelia Deter. Steve wasn’t the smartest person, but with some help, he got by. He had a slim, but muscular body with broad shoulders and legs the size of tree-trunks. He was a big athlete, with a tackle and fumble record that exceeded that of a professional football player, and, as modest as he was, he always tried his best no matter what he did. All was normal until one particular day, when a tragedy struck that would alter his life forever.
He was walking home from school, talking to himself, about how hard football practice was and how he wished he could get away from school and football and become something extraordinary. Right Pro 26- just another play in the Etroverse he thought, wandering into the space of his imaginary world. “No, Steve, pull it together, you lose one Tae-Kwon-Do tournament and you fall apart,” he said, emphatically shaking his head and looking down. He had recently been to the Etroworld Tae-Kwon-Do tournament and had lost to an etro-15-degree black-belt named Hirashi. “Damn that Hirashi! One day I’ll show him,” Steve said, clenching his powerful fist and mashing them together, violently, as if he were preparing to fight himself. “I’ll show them all”. Then Steve began thinking of the techniques. He went over and over them in his mind, shuffling side to side like a pouncing tiger. “Soon I’ll be able to master all the techniques. After all, my sensei, Master Sona, said that he could sense the presence of a strong essence within me,” he thought. Steve remembered Sona’s words as if he had just heard them: There is something special about you, my son. Your energy is fighting to get out. Once it is let out no one can stop it. You have yet to learn the path of a true warrior, but you will find it some way. You have the potential, only you, my pupil, and once you unleash it your power shall be among the gods of heaven and earth. He practiced the routine again, even though he was tired, and thought of Sona’s wise words. Then he looked down at his fists and clenched them, saying to himself, “One day I’ll be the most incredible fighter in the world. I will show them my potential- they’ll see.” By the time he was done with his routine, he was home. He took the house keys from his pocket and unlocked the door to the house. He opened the door slowly, as a deep feeling of consternation overcame him. He proceeded in a grotesque site awaiting him. He stumbled in to find a distorted Penton lying on the ground with articles of fur and blood covering his body and the very house, itself. My friend, my companion, who could’ve done this to you he thought. He sat there, stunned, staring at the corpse that was once his every day cushion of comfort that greeted him at the door. Tears came into his eyes as he reminisced about Penton. Then he scanned the body with a look of sorrow to find a bloodstained note attached to Penton’s tail. The words “bring $100,000 to Acadian Bridge of EtroJape’ or your parents will die” were scrawled on the note. Steve looked around the tousled room in frustration, wiping his face of the tears. Oh my god, what am I going to do he thought. The scene of the house didn’t make things much better. Tiny articles of paper, documents, candy wrappers, and plants that were once beautiful littered the ground everywhere and blood had been splattered on the wall directly adjacent to his dead dog. “My mom and dad… what am I going to do.” Shock and pain was overcoming his mind and the fear that he would never know his parents love again was cascading over him like a waterfall. Steve sat in shock, unable to move, unable to act, unable to think and the evening came suddenly like a foreboding cloud of oncoming death. Steve closed his eyes for a minute to think of his next move and said a little prayer for his parents. “I need to find where this Acadian Bridge is, first and foremost”, he thought to himself. Steve ran to his room and searched the computer for a map or description of any kind to find the location of the bridge in EtroJape’. He found this description under “Acadian Bridge”: “This Bridge, also called the dead bridge, is a monument of EtroJape’. There is a legend that tells of a dark man that lives near these parts, as well as many apparitions.” He logged off, crumpled up the ransom, and threw it across the room. Suddenly, he thought, regaining the realness of the situation, “I’ll probably need some money.” He ran to his room and his parents’ room and scrounged up as much money as he could find. The money wasn’t enough, though, so he figured that he would have to get there at any cost, and by any means necessary, even if it meant stealing money on the way. His desperation taking over his decisions, he put the money in his pocket and said, “Hang on, Mom and Dad, I’ll save you.” With that, he ran to the door. He was on his way to the airport on a mission to liberate his parents.
