During the turbulent years of 1930-1965, events disrupted the lives of many African Americans. The Kane family was no exception. Stanley Kane, a widower and father of seven, was the family's anchor. Annie Jo Kane is the main character in this story. She and her family are sometimes traumatized and sometimes elated by events that unfold. The story takes place in Mississippi and North Carolina.

Pa stopped dead in his tracks, because it hit him that Mr. Morgan was right, but before he went back in the room with his children, he walked up the road then dropped to his knees and cried. These things happened too often in Mississippi. Justice for colored people was unheard of. He felt so helpless and frustrated.
Ireland 1947. Seven weeks of relentless snow. Guard Eamon Foley is searching for a missing child.
At Toby Appleyard’s farm, he discovers the kitchen littered with dead cats. And the skeletal remains of a woman. Upstairs, Toby is dead in his bed.
Dublin 1941. A brutal murder. Mistaken identity. And barman Eamon Foley is running for his life.
Nine months later Foley is in a crowded pub, and his brother-in-law is shot dead.
