I was born Rose Elizabeth Evans, at three fifty-nine one rainy September afternoon in industrialized Pittsburgh, amongst its many mills and chimneys. The Great War had ended and the industrial age had begun. Father was the one that took credit for calling me Rose, but to everyone else I was simply Rosie. My parents teased that when I was born I was such an ugly baby that they felt compelled to name me after a symbol of beauty to counterbalance my offense to society. For father, Rose Elizabeth fit the bill.
