My journey into self-publishing was unusual. I dropped out of grad school in the mid-1990s and decided to turn my graduate thesis into a self-published book. Self publishing was not my job, and I had never done it. I owned and operated a full-time construction business. I had no formal educational background in English or creative writing. My college degree was in science. The master’s program I had nearly finished was in sustainable systems.
At that time, I made a promise to myself: if I ever sell more than a million dollars’ worth of my own self-published books, I’ll write a small book about how I did it. This is that book. I’ve hit over three million dollars in book sales, but just haven’t had time to devote to this book until now, for reasons that should become clear as you read this.
I also made another promise to myself. once I started, I would stick with self-publishing for ten years, working, as time allowed, during winters, nights, and weekends. If I wasn’t getting anywhere meaningful by then, I’d quit and move on to something else. Here I am, 27 years later and still going strong, and I’m in my 70th orbit around the sun.
I also had no financial backing when I started self publishing. No advances, no royalties. I was not affiliated with any government agency or academic institution, nor am I today. I had no grants, loans, or inheritances.
I tend to learn things the hard way, sometimes to a fault. Needless to say, I learned a thing or two about self publishing over these past few decades, and I’m going to summarize in this book what I consider to be the most helpful points.
I wish I could have read a book like this when I was getting started!
