The most common trap of modeling is modeling SCAMS. You need to be aware of the fact that there are thousands of modeling scams in existence. Numerous girls and guys are being scammed out of their money by model searches, modeling schools, and modeling “agencies”.
For the most part, modeling searches are irrelevant and don’t lead to major discoveries. Rather than wasting your time or your money, simply find the agencies you want to apply to online (or through my resource list) and apply to them, following their submission preferences. It is a lot simpler, efficient, and cheaper.
As far as modeling schools go, if your look is good enough, then a reputable agency will teach you what you need to know.
If you are ever approached by an agency that guarantees s/he can make you a star, run far, far away. NO ONE CAN GUARANTEE YOU JOBS-EVER!
Beware of ‘agencies’ who will charge you a fee for representation. The only money an agency should make, is from the jobs that you’ve done that they’ve found for you (generally 20%).
Liars, perverts, and people cheating you out of your money, generally fall in the same spectrum. Always keep your eyes open for people trying to get more from you than work (if that is the case, leave immediately and alert your agent). Keep an eye out for people trying to cheat you out of money and always read your contracts carefully before signing. This could mean the difference between getting paid $100 and $1,000!
If you ever feel uncomfortable or feel as if your safety is in danger, leave the premises immediately. If you’ve walked out of a job, call your agent and explain the situation. Better for them to hear it from you, than from a pissed off client.
Modeling can be a very fulfilling, exciting, challenging industry – if you keep these things in mind, you can avoid becoming a statistic and remain one of the models staying on top!
