“Elizabeth, put that pencil down!” yells Miss Atkins. The tone of her voice adds to the commotion of the class, to the adrenaline of the situation. “Matt! Everyone! Stay away from her! Elizabeth, I said put that pencil down!”
Elizabeth wants to comply but can’t. Matthew wants to kill her. Everyone in the classroom has retreated to the walls, even before Miss Atkins’ warnings. Some have scampered to the front of the classroom, threatening to leave. But Matthew doesn’t budge from his cat-like stance. He’s prepared to lunge at Elizabeth as soon as the opportunity presents itself.
Miss Atkins doesn’t know what else to do. Of course, approaching Elizabeth is the furthest thought in her mind, but she isn’t sure if code allows her to follow her instinct—flee to safety—so she simply stands in place, watching, paralyzed by her inability to make a decision.
