DREAMTIME Science Fiction Romance Book Review Paula Blais Gorgas by Linda Steadman Dragonfly Publishing 2001 ISBN: 0971047375 One night, returning home from work in Tulsa OK, Dr Loren Price has an encounter he'd rather not remember. That's not to be, however, as nightmares and uncanny happenings begin to plague him and his family. Denis Earley, his best friend since college, arrives in Tulsa soon afterward and is drawn into his friend's problems, helped by Jeannie MacLeod, Loren's sister-in-law. She's a reporter for the local newspaper with a knack for finding stories and the talent to dig them out. Denis is a psychiatrist, tired of life on the East Coast, who returns home to Tulsa to forget about a bad marriage and to develop his practice. The last thing he's looking for is a woman to complicate his life, but Jeannie is everything he's ever wanted. Add to that the unpredictable behavior of the friend he loves like a brother, and Denis is not happy. When he realizes Jeannie thinks UFOs are causing Loren's problems, he knows he has to break off the relationship. Jeannie has all the answers. A reporter with a burning desire to find the 'big story', Jeannie is determined and smart. Loren is suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. Aliens, who left circular impressions of burnt grass in two locations near the house, abducted Loren. She, Jeannie, is going to write an award-winning story based on the incidents she's uncovering. But she's just reporting the news. That is, until she becomes part of the story. Even her desire for Denis, the disbelieving doctor she's falling in love with, takes a back seat to what's revealed by her investigations. I'm not a UFO buff, so I began this book with a decided wariness. The story, however, grabbed me from page one and keep me guessing all the way through. I found a suspenseful story with no pat answers, which left me to make my own decisions about UFOs and visiting aliens. This is a perfect book for doubters - I was thoroughly entertained yet left with a puzzle to solve if I want to pursue it. Jeannie and Denis are great together, and great fighting each other, yet they come together when they need to and provide support for the people they care about most, including each other. Their relationship, while rocky, never strays far, and when they finally admit their need for one another, they are honest about their feelings. DREAMTIME is a well-paced, suspenseful book dealing with UFOs and their effect on the lives of those brought in contact with them. While the aliens themselves are only dealt with as they affect the characters of the story, their presence lends a recognizable threat with fear never far away. This is Paula Blais Gorgas' first book with Dragonfly Publishers and hopefully the first of many.

Sci-fi lovers will love this wholly believable account of generational alien abduction. Romance fans should note that the HEA is literally up in the air at tale's end. Driving home one night, Professor Loren Price, well known for his level headedness, has an experience that leaves him edgy, and sleepless. A bright light in the sky had come closer and closer to his vehicle until he had feared that a plane crash was imminent. He has no memories between turning into a park to avoid the crash, and leaving one hour later to go home. Now he is troubled by strange dreams, and peculiar noises in the house. His pregnant wife, Barb is justifiable concerned, and also edgy for reasons she can't quite pinpoint. Several days later, Dr. Denis Earley, just back in town, arrives for dinner at the invitation of his friend and former college roommate, Loren Price. That evening he meets Barb's sister, Jeannie MacLeod, a reporter for the Brenton News and Sun. The attraction between these two is instantaneous. Both share a deep concern for Loren's emotional state, though otherwise their beliefs are completely at odds. Denis believes a practical explanation can be found through therapy, while Jeannie is convinced that Loren has suffered post traumatic stress syndrome due to a close encounter with a UFO. Denis cannot bend his mind around such a scenario. Jeannie's investigation makes him wary of her motives. While Denis wants to believe in Jeannie's sincerity, he is reluctant to trust the reporter. He had come back to this small town, to recover from his ex-wife's betrayal. His faith in women is at an all time low. Even with the evidence stacking up in favor of Jeannie's theory, he is certain that her real motive is to write a story that will catapult her to fame and fortune. Would she be capable of exploiting her own family? Jeannie can't even explain to herself her certainty of the reality of her beliefs. All of the abductees she's met share Loren's symptoms. The majority of the abductions were later remembered as dreams, explaining the reluctance of victims to sleep. The subject of dreams awakens peculiar childhood memories in Jeannie. Could it be a subconscious memory of her own experiences that has her so convinced that her beliefs about Loren are true? Denis is the only one she can trust to help her find the answers. Can she open his mind to the mysteries of the universe? More important can he open his heart enough to trust her and believe in their love. I found this novel completely fascinating. Engrossing and realistic, DREAMTIME will keep the reader on the edge of their seat until the last word. It was a difficult read to put down.

While driving home at night under a clear Tulsa sky, Dr. Loren Price sees a strange light that eerily and silently comes from nowhere. He puts the pedal to the medal, but fails to out run the light that is just overhead. An hour later, Loren is still heading home, but cannot account for the last sixty minutes. Loren becomes moody and jumpy while not able to deeply sleep for weird dreams frighten and haunt him. On Halloween night, Loren's sister-in-law Jeannie and his best friend psychiatrist Dr. Denis Early meet for the first time. Worried about Loren's drastic behavioral change, they discuss the cause. Denis believes Loren suffers from repressing a nasty but mundane event. Jeannie feels her brother-in-law languishes from an UFO abduction. Even as they work together to help Loren and an attraction between them grows, Denis thinks that Jeannie is using him to prove her theory is correct. From the opening paragraph, readers will expect Rod Serling to appear to introduce. As the TV show's theme music will play in the audience's head, the romance between Denis and Jeannie provides a normalization core that brings the other elements into a plausible but even weirder story line. Whether UFOs are involved or not, fans will enjoy this out-of-this world novel that will help make a shining star of author Paula Blais Gorgas.
