Michelle tossed her veil on the paper goods and stepped back. There was one more item she wanted to add to the pyre. Reaching behind her back, she slid a few satin buttons from their loopholes on her wedding dress until she could get a good hold of the fabric at the high neckline. Then she yanked at it and ripped open the remaining buttons until the dress hung loosely from her arms.
"Michelle, no! You're father paid a fortune for that dress," her mother pleaded. "That's French lace." She withdrew an embroidered handkerchief from her sleeve and began fanning her overheated face.
Stepping on the gathered lace overskirt and train to hold them in place, Mike ripped the snug-fitting sleeves off, leaving them inside out. She split the lace past her waist and stepped out of the designer-created overdress. Without a moment's regret, she scooped it up, train and all, and tossed in onto the pyre. Only decorum prevented her from pulling off the strapless satin under-dress and tossing it in, too.
She looked down at the engagement ring that sparkled on her finger. But when she began to twist it off, Lily demanded that she stop. "Your father paid for that, too."
