Ronald reached in his pocket and removed an envelope addressed to Elsie dated days after she met his wife at his apartment. “This is what I am talking about!”
Elsie reached for the envelope and recognized the handwriting immediately. She looked up at Ronald and began to cry. “You’ve known all this time?”
“I knew everything before you told me you were pregnant. I know how you spent the days before I came home from Trinidad with him. I know how well he fucked you. I know how much you loved and missed him. I know everything Elsie!! EVERYTHING!”
“Ronald…it was a mistake…I didn’t know how to tell you…I didn’t want to hurt you” she cried.
“And fucking another man wasn’t going to hurt...what kind of bullshit is that?” Ronald said pounding his hand against the wall. “I am tired of you fucking lying to me, Elsie. Is Karina my child or not? I don’t want to go another day not knowing. Is she mine?”
Elsie began sobbing uncontrollably. “I don’t know Ronald…I don’t know if she’s yours”
Karina was awoken from her sleep by the cursing and shouting. She walked into the hallway quietly to see what was going on. She was pretty smart for a 6 year old but she was still unable to understand what her parents were yelling about. She kneeled in the entrance of the living room and covered her ears in fright. Just then, Ronald stormed across the room and lunged at Elsie. In one swift motion he slapped her across the face so hard she fell to the floor.
“I knew you were fucking lying to me…I should’ve never believed you. How could you do this to me?”
“I’m sorry Ronald…” Elsie cried trying to get up from the floor. “I didn’t want to hurt you.”
“Well…you did… you fucking slut!” Ronald screamed “Are you happy now?”
“Ronald…please! Karina is in the next room. Please stop screaming!!” Elsie pleaded.
“Do you love him, Elsie? Do you still love him?”
“What? What do you mean?” Elsie asked confused at his question.
“Do you still love this Mason character?” Ronald repeated raising his voice again.
Elsie wiped the blood dripping from her lip steadying herself on the kitchen counter.
“Yes…Ronald…I do—I still love Mason!” Elsie admitted for the first time in a long time. “God help me…I still love him!” Elsie collapsed in a heap of tears.
Ronald stood shocked that she would admit that to him so easily. His anger began to build up as he looked at Elsie sobbing on the floor. She loves another man, he thought to himself as he paced with his head in his hands. He knew in his heart what he had to do. Ronald walked up to Elsie and lifted her up again. He wiped her tears away and tilted her head up so he could look in her eyes one last time. “I loved you more than life itself…Elsie…I would have done anything for you and Karina.” Ronald began with tears running down his face. “But I can’t sit here and allow you to play me like this. I love you Elsie.”
“Ronald…please don’t leave…we can work this out….please don’t……” Elsie screamed holding on to Ronald’s arms pleading with him. Her screams were interrupted when Ronald reached behind her, grabbed a large kitchen knife and plunged it into Elsie’s chest. She looked him dead in his eyes as the blood drained from her limp body. Elsie looked down at the butcher knife protruding from her chest and back Ronald who stood before her with contempt in his eyes. “Ronnie…why…did…you …do…” her voice trailed off as she got weaker.
“Because I love you…Elsie and I can’t let you play me like this…”Ronald repeated as he pulled the knife from her chest and ferociously thrust the knife multiple times into Elsie’s limp body until he could the deadness in her eyes. Ronald step from Elsie and let her body slump to the floor in a loud thump. She lay on the floor saturated in her own blood with her eyes wide open, her body lifeless. Ronald looked at Elsie’s limb body and thought to himself, she deserved that shit!
Karina’s eyes widened as she saw her father stab her mother repeatedly. When her mother’s limp, bloodied body fell to the ground; Karina covered her mouth and ran back into her room sobbing. She hid in her closet fearful that her father was going to do the same thing to her. In the closet, Karina brought her knees to her chest and began to whimper in fear afraid her father would find her.
Ronald stood over Elsie’s dead body for about 15 minutes before he snapped back into reality. Karina!, he thought to himself. “Elsie! Oh shit…what the fuck have I done?” He said looking down at Elsie’s dead body and the bloodied knife in his own hand. He dropped the knife and ran into the bathroom quickly removing his blood-soaked clothes. Blood ran down the drain as Ronald hurriedly washed his face and hands. He dried his hands with a towel as he walked towards Karina’s room.
“Karina…Karina...baby where are you?” Ronald said noticing that Karina wasn’t lying in her bed. “Where are you honey?” He quickly scanned her bedroom and realized that Karina was better off without him. He killed her mother…what could he do for her now? Ronald went to his bedroom and changed his clothes. He grabbed his things and left the apartment leaving behind the carnage.
