Rashtor stood silent, looked at the waters he had revered since childhood, felt the tremor beneath his feet. For fifteen years the quakes had built, had sent fragments of his beloved Atlantis into the ocean’s depths. Time was at hand. Soon, all traces of the Atlantean culture and philosophy would vanish forever.
After the Council had ignored their warnings, Rashtor and his colleagues had labored secretly to ensure Atlantean erudition would not be totally lost. One day, the genetically engineered offspring the scientists had produced would lead the world in rediscovering the glory, the technology of Atlantis—only this time, they would do it right, would preserve and protect the world from the mistakes the Atlanteans had made.
For now, he must trust the Fates to be kind to the one remaining hope of his people. He pulled a vial from the pocket of his robe, held it to the light. Inside the ampoule, a dozen inch-long creatures swam, zealous in their quest for life.
“My children,” he whispered, “my only regret is that I will not know you as adults. You have been gifted with all you need to survive the deep. More importantly, you bear the consummate knowledge of the Ancients, as well as that which is the best of our culture. Swim now in the waters that will sustain you.
“You and I shall not meet again, save perhaps in a greater land past the vast corridors of time. Guard well your knowledge, and tell your children and their children of Atlantis, lest they forget their forefathers who sacrificed their lives for you.”
Rashtor opened the vial, poured its contents into the water and watched the tiny creatures disappear into the immensity of the ocean as yet another massive tremor rocked the platform on which he stood . . .
