It was deplorable. Eofyn could hear the sounds of the houses being destroyed, and Pyram was leading him straight for them.
“If we go where they’ve already been, we’re much less likely
to get caught,” he had said, but Eofyn was dreading the sight of
what his lack of preparation had caused. He wasn’t sure he could
bear it. Why couldn’t he have worked out how to use the Pure
Fyre and have seen this coming?
As the city shook and crumbled, they ran to the source,
hoping to slip by unnoticed. Eofyn had faith in Pyram’s abilities,
but with the crystals so dim, he wondered if Pyram’s gifted
instincts might falter. Pyram didn’t appear to worry, but it was
difficult to tell his thoughts beyond his almost arrogant mask.
Eofyn had always envied Pyram’s confidence, but now he nearly
feared it. The shouts of the Gaernod soldiers were getting louder,
the thunder of falling buildings was breaking his heart, but he
pressed on and followed Pyram, who seemed unfazed.
But as they rounded a corner, even Pyram stopped in his
tracks. It was pure carnage. The people of Gelyfed who had failed
to run quickly enough lay everywhere. The land was so flat that
the demolished city gate could be seen clearly. There was nowhere
else to hide, and they were only at the edge of the war zone.
“We…we just have to make it to that canal there,” Pyram
reasoned. “It flows out of the city to complete the circulation
back to the Sea of Modwen. That’s our escape. Just get past a
few buildings, sneak into the water, and we’re out.” He looked
from the wasteland to Eofyn. “Off to Tir then, right?” he said
lightheartedly, but neither of them could muster a smile.
Another shock hit the land.
Eofyn shuddered. “We’d better go.”
They quickly ran to the next crumbled building, and another
after that, keeping their pattern scattered to avoid being noticed.
When they hit the last building, they crouched down among
the pile of rubble and checked the path between them and their
escape. There was no living person in sight.
Eofyn prepared to run, but—
“Uh oh…”
Eofyn looked back at Pyram. “Uh oh, what?”
Pyram spun around to see a soldier leering at them as he
approached with a black orb that appeared to be on fire. Eofyn
stared back at him, confused and unsure whether or not running
was their best option.
The soldier drew back his hand, preparing to throw the
flaming ball. “Something new to you, hmm?” he asked, smiling
wide at their shocked faces and showing his yellow teeth. “You’ll
never get the chance to understand now,” he said, tilting his head
to the side. “Sorry.”
Pyram’s red crystal blazed, but he was visibly fighting his
instinct, until finally he shook his head, deciding. “Nope, we
should definitely run.” He grabbed Eofyn’s shirt and ran off with
the king in tow.
The soldier threw his weapon. It landed and bounced just
behind Pyram and Eofyn. Eofyn mistakenly looked back just in
time to see the black ball explode. Flames redder than Pyram’s
crystal enveloped Eofyn’s vision as the heat began to sear his face,
and the shockwave picked both of them off the ground and sent
them flying several feet into the air.
Pyram lost his grip of Eofyn as they spun off in different
directions. Eofyn landed hard and felt his head smash against a
piece of what had once been someone’s home. He saw blurred
swirls of red and orange and felt more searing heat before he
accepted that he had obviously failed and taken his closest friend
with him.
