“I DON’T KNOW YOU GOD”
Many times in my life when God called me to follow Him, I never did more than hear Him, wave, and go my own way. He continued to call me through the years but it wasn’t until my thirties that He finally got my attention. He called loudly when He gave us our Autistic daughter, Dani. He used her to begin breaking my extreme independence of Him. He and I both knew I wanted to give Him my life and follow Him, but my desire for independence always prevailed. Even after Dani’s birth, I fought for years to gain control of a situation that could not be controlled. Her extreme disabilities were something no doctor could fix. Once I realized this, I began to pester God to heal her. I coaxed, bargained, and screamed my case to Him.
After years of fighting this one-sided battle, I finally began to break. My independent heart learned to submit and I began to lean on Him and hear Him speak to my heart. In my exhaustion I finally stopped long enough and got close enough to hear Him tell me the most simple, yet life changing fact: “Nancy, you don’t follow me because you don’t know me.” He went on to say that if I knew Him better, I would then love and trust Him enough to follow wherever He led me.
When He pointed this out, I remember thinking, “God is right. I really don’t know Him and further more, I really don’t trust Him either. No wonder I won’t give control to Him.” Once aware of this, I began to seek to know Him better because then I would be able to trust and follow Him fully. As I searched for Him, He began to open my eyes to the many facets of His wonderful character. Though we can never fully know God and all His majesty, He was faithful to give me a glimpse of His glory, just enough to be amazed. And just as He said, when I got to know Him, I fell in love and fully committed myself to Him.
