“We are off to a bad start, aren’t we Jove?” Samael said from directly behind him.
The sharp surge of fear Jove felt then rendered him utterly still. Even his breath had halted. After a moment, he heard the man give him a throaty chuckle. Slowly he turned around.
“How did you?” Jove began and stopped. Samael was leaning against the bookshelf and casually tapping a cigarette from the pack. “You can’t smoke in here, the building is smoke free,” Jove stated lamely. Samael’s smile never faltered as he lit up.
“Not anymore,” he said, taking a deep and satisfying drag. “Nice to see you have your priorities in order.”
Jove stared at the blue curls of smoke unable to get his bearings on reality. His universe suddenly too far askew for coherent thought.
“So far I’ve told you that your death is imminent, and proved myself able to move through solid matter. So of course your main concerns are secondhand smoke and the possibility of breaking your lease,” Samael said with a smirk.
“You have to leave. Just get out. Who… Whatever you are I can’t deal with it right now. Just go!” Jove replied. He pointed a shaking finger back at the door for emphasis.
Splaying his hands out wide before him Samael said in a low voice “Be not afraid,” his eyes bored into Jove. “That’s supposed to be my opening line isn’t it? Sorry for not following the script.”
“Script? What?” Jove said, still pointing stupidly at the door.
