This book explores the ancient origins of mysticism, various popular beliefs and mystical movements in Christianity. These are compare with a survey of ninety mystical events in the Bible in order to glean insights into the sources of mystical experience.
This book examines past mystical movements and religions and their influence on Christianity and modern supernatural beliefs. A survey of mystical events and experiences within the Bible is presented in order to understand the Biblical view of mysticism in Christianity. These findings are compared to the practices and beliefs of those who seek mystical experiences within and outside of Christianity. It is my hope that this study will clarify the role of mysticism in Christianity and lead to a greater appreciation for the wonders of the mystical spiritual life in Jesus Christ who is the only path to God.

What is the role of mysticism in Christianity? Many Christians are uncomfortable with this subject as it seems beyond our ability to understand or quantify. However, the Trinity, the virgin birth and the atoning death of Jesus are just a few examples of mysteries that are fundamental to the Christian faith. Such mysteries are external events and facts that can be acknowledged without any internal spiritual experience. On the other hand, these concepts can lead to a spiritual rebirth that is an individual experience that fundamentally changes thinking, actions and character. This spiritual birth is a mystical encounter with God whereby the sins of those who put their faith in Jesus are forgiven. The Holy Spirit indwells the believer and brings the experience of being free from the guilt of sins and of being loved. The Holy Spirit dwells within and begins to transform the mind which produces changes in behavior and the development of characteristics such as greater love, joy, peace patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self-control. There is an intangible but real presence within the believer such that there is a sense of “we“ versus just “me“ before the spiritual birth. Therefore, mysticism is part of the experience of born-again Christians.
Humans have a fundamental drive to attain greater levels of awareness of who we are, our purpose and destiny. This is evident by the prevalence of religions throughout history. The goal of most religions is to achieve contact or union with the divine (or the cosmic consciousness). In recent human history, science has become increasingly important in answering these questions. Many people with a purely scientific view of the universe tend to hope for contact with some advanced beings who will enlighten mankind. Others seek expanded consciousness leading to union with the ultimate reality or God through meditation and other mind-altering techniques.
