A woman is thrown into another dimension a place where America lost the Revolutionary War.
Is love closer than we imagine, perhaps even occupying our same space in another dimension? Maybe that “we’re not alone” feeling is more than a feeling. Gwyneth McGowan has no idea how she got there, but this blend of colonial America and medieval England is not home. When a handsome soldier calls her by name, Gwen hopes that he can give her some answers and help her get back to her own world. Falling in love is not part of the plan. Captain Thane Garren has to find the king’s betrothed. Then he can return to the peace of his manor. In a case of mistaken identity, he presents the wrong woman to the king. Now the king has commanded him and Gwen to do the job right. Gwen’s actions are exotic and mystifying, but this intoxicating stranger makes him feel things he has never felt, things he doesn’t want to feel, doesn’t deserve.
Excerpt
He had come dangerously close to kissing her and, though it felt right at the time, Thorn wasn’t at all sure it would have been wise. He needed to remember his mission, what was at stake and why she was part of it. This time he could not fail. Thorn needed to concentrate, be free of distractions. The way he had always been in battle.
His wife was proving to be more than a distraction. Gwen was exciting and bright. When he had her body beneath his, Thorn could feel her heart racing. He could smell her flowery musky scent, could feel her heated panting breaths on his face. Thorn wanted her, he hadn’t stopped wanting her. Somehow, he had to find a way to ignore this constant hunger.
By the time they had stopped riding for the day, Thorn was certain he had his urges under control.
“That was mean,” Gwen said, stomping by him into their room. “Making me sit in that carriage alone all afternoon.” She turned around to glare.
“I needed to get some air.” He smirked. “I could have sent Magnus in to keep you company.”
Gwen put her hands on her hips and tapped her foot. “You’re in that much of a hurry to be a widower.”
Thorn unbuttoned his coat. “He would not have killed you.”
“Don’t be so sure, the man’s practically slays me every time he looks at me.”
He laughed. “I didn’t give him orders to kill you and Magnus always follows orders.”
Gwen plopped into a chair near the fireplace. She took off her shoes and threw them into a corner. “Needed to get air, my foot, you were avoiding me.”
“I beg your pardon.”
“You heard me.” She stood. “You didn’t want to be alone with me. You’re a coward,” she added over her shoulder as she moved to the fire.
Thorn caught her arm and brought her back to face him. “Watch it, milady. It is unwise to call a captain in the king’s army a coward.”
Gwen rolled her eyes. “Not that kind of coward. I’m sure you’re very brave in battle.” She poked his chest with her finger. “But you can’t deny that you were going to kiss me this afternoon until Magnus showed up.”
He caught her finger. “And that makes me a coward.”
“The fact that you didn’t stick around to try again does.”
Thorn pulled her up against him and glared down at her. “Maybe I thought better of the idea.”
He saw her swallow and watched her eyes gloss with moisture. “Is the idea of kissing me that unpleasant?”
Thorn clenched his teeth and moved her from him. “We have a job to do.”
“That doesn’t answer the question.” Gwen turned to look at the fire. “Then again, perhaps it does.”
“I’m going to the pub.” Thorn headed for the door but something he had heard in her voice made him stop. She sounded resigned, dejected. Without turning to her, he said, “No, Gwen. Kissing you doesn’t sound unpleasant at all.”
