The Shunammite Woman, give the name of Bina by the author lived in the time of the Old Testament, years 895 BC to 885 BC, the years her story is covered in the Old Testament, 2 Kings 4:8-37 and 2 Kings 8:1-6. The nonfiction part of the story is when she meets the prophet Elisha, befriends him and later Elisha raises her son from the dead. The fictional part covers how she meets her elderly husband and the time she spent in the land of the Philistines during the famine. A poem is added at the end of the book by Mr. Fred McKinney, a preacher friend of the author.

Bina couldn't sit still in the house. She had made the trip outside five times in the past hour. She remained outside on the last trip. Gehazi ascended the steps and entered their room. Another ten minutes passed as Bina continued to say a silent prayer.
Gehazi appeared at the upper room's door.
"My lady, Elisha would like
for you to come up."
Bina stepped lively, bounding up the steps, knowing this summons was a good sign. Gehazi stepped aside allowing her to enter the room. Elisha extended his arm toward her son.
"Take up your son."
Bina drew a quick breath and fell at Elisha's feet.
"My dear and holy prophet. Again, I ask your forgiveness and ask God to forgive my improper addressing of you when Oren died.

A touching story
Anyone who loves the stories from the Old Testament will love this story. The Shunammite woman was an extra ordinary person with great faith, so I know why Elisha performed two special miracles for her. I had never heard of this story before and I grew up with the stories from the Old and New Testament since my youth. Apparently it’s one that has been passed over. At the end of the story, the author adds a poem written by Fred McKinney that was so beautiful. This poem really touched my heart and brought tears to my eyes. I believe it helped to round off the story for a wonderful conclusion.
Wonderful Bible story comes to life
The kind, caring Shunammite Woman, referred to as Bina, comes to life in the pages of this novella. In a sweet love story Bina goes to market to buy seeds and meets her husband, who is much older than her. She accepts that they probably will never have children, but she has a full life caring for her husband and other people in the village. One day she invites a weary traveler into her home for food and water. He turns out to be Elisha, a prophet. This act of kindness changes Bina’s life.
Mr. Hammersley does a wonderful job recreating this Bible Story. The reader sees that miracles do happen, that a deep faith and trust in God is rewarded and that kindness enhances our lives. Mr. Hammersley’s talent shines as this story flows on the pages. The well-developed characters stayed with me and touched my heart. I highly recommend The Shunammite Woman.
