Buddy Wilson is the only one who can see the shed in the distance. As he walks toward it the shed vanishes.
At an early age Buddy Wilson sees a shed at a distance from his childhood home. No one else can see it. When he walks toward it the shed vanishes. As he gets older he can get closer before the shed vanishes. He gets a strange feeling as he stands where the shed should be. Throughout his life the shed haunts him and seems to draw on his emotions even when he isn't close to it.
He must get on with his life despite the strange structure. He graduates from high school, college, falls in love, gets a job, marries Nina, the woman of his dreams, suffers many losses, and struggles throughout his life. At the end of his life he is finally able to stand before the shed and enters. Inside the shed he learns the significance of the structure which has plagued him all his life. Was it a curse or a blessing?
Excerpt
“I’ll have twenty-one credit-hours, enough to get my Master’s degree at
the end of the semester,” Nina said.
“That’s great, but that makes me hesitant to ask you something,” he said.
“What’s that?”
“Do you think you’d have time to write to me?” he managed to ask,
overcoming his shyness and apprehensive about her answer.
Her answer surprised him. “Are you trying to add me to your string of
women?”
That cut him deeply. He opened his mouth and furrowed his brow, but
before he could find the words to respond, Gloria lashed out at Nina.
“What an awful thing to say, Nina. You know good and well Mandy and
Mitzy are gone and there never was a string.”
“Calm down, Gloria,” Jenny said.
“I will not. Nina, you’ve treated Buddy like dirt and I’m getting sick of it.
Don’t you know he’s crazy about you?” Gloria said, jabbing a finger
angrily at Nina.
“Gloria, Buddy doesn’t need you to tell Nina how he feels about her,”
Jenny said.
“Please stop,” Buddy said, losing control of his emotions as he listened to
them. He regained enough of his composure to continue, “Ever since I
came into your lives, I’ve caused all these conflicts between you. I never
meant to come between you and your friendship for each other.”
“Buddy, it’s not your fault,” Gloria said.
“Yes it is. I need to stay out of your lives for good. I’m sorry.” He started
to put his coat on again.
“Don’t go,” Jenny said.
“Nina, don’t let him leave. Surely you didn’t mean what you said.” Gloria
shed tears, no longer steaming at Nina, but pleading.
Buddy glanced at Nina and realized she wouldn’t respond to Gloria’s plea.
Her lack of a response cut him deeper, like a sharp surgeon’s knife starting
an operation. If she didn’t realize how he felt about her before, she
certainly did now. He wondered if he’d ever get to tell her properly and
under the right circumstances. From what she said she wouldn’t accept or
believe him anyway. He may be important to a lot of people but
apparently not to her.
