Star ship captain, Jim Hansen, seeks someone who can cure his ill daughter, Patty. He must travel to the end of the universe to save his daughter and a woman he loves.
The challenge for Jim Hansen, a widower and starship captain, is to find a cure for his ten-year-old daughter, Patty. She is afflicted with a nerve disease that has left her helpless and outwardly nonresponsive to her surroundings. With no hope for a cure on earth, he must go into space. His quest takes him to three different planets.
The first planet, called the Gel Planet which he had been to before, contains a state of matter that turns to a blue, healing gel on rare occasions, but circumstances prevent him from dipping Patty into the gel. When Patty’s nurse dies in the crash on the Gel Planet, Leah, a crewperson from Mizar (a sun system in the handle of the Big Dipper) takes over caring for Patty. Leah says Patty can be healed on Mizar, but that is a deception. Despite that Hansen falls in love with Leah, but her culture forbids a Mizarian woman to marry an earthman. While on Mizar, Patty is in danger and Hansen must fight to save Patty from men called the Outsiders who try to take over the all women society. He uses his strength and electronics expertise to overcome odds against him on different occasions.
The third planet is in a globular cluster in the Andromeda Galaxy. The people there read Patty’s mind earlier and her thoughts contained nothing but love which attracted them to her. She is healed and becomes their leader but she must stay there amidst the complex fields otherwise she may return to her diseased state.
The story closes by Leah falling ill and the only place she can be healed is on the planet, Thule, which is located literally at the end of the universe. Because of Hansen’s heroics and bringing peace between the women’s society and the Outsiders on Mizar, the ban against a marriage between Leah and Hansen is lifted.

Two more came through the doors. Hansen faced them in the corridor outside the chamber. A warrior appeared to help him. They beat their opponents, but more men entered. It was too much for them. Two men kicked the warrior brutally, two more paired up to beat Hansen. One held him from behind while the other pounded him in the stomach then the face. The blows doubled him up, jerking his head from side to side. He gasped for breath, his cheekbone throbbing. They threw him to the floor, drew their blasters, and kicked open the door to the chamber.
Hansen tried to get up, but another man on his way into the chamber, kicked him back down. He fought to stay conscious. The sound of blaster fire came from within the council chambers. He looked up from his prone position and saw Gant, sporting a bruised cheek, come through the inner door and look down at him. He drew a deep breath and spoke in a subdued tone.
“You should have stayed out of this, Earthman.” He stepped over the prostrate figures of his own men and entered the chambers.
