Buck falls in love with Carrie and later Sally. They both leave him.
Buck falls in love with Carrie when she agrees to help him in calculus in high school. She is not friendly to anyone but Buck. When she moves out east, Buck learns she becomes engaged to her Russian chess player friend, Vlad. Sally has loved Buck since grade school and Buck convinces her he is over Carrie. She moves to a college out east to further her writing career and falls for an English professor.
It seems all Buck can do is lose girlfriends. Will that change when he is hired by Eve to work in her chemistry lab analyzing minerals?
Excerpt
“I get the idea you are sending me alone to the instrument exhibit,” Buck said, looking at Eve with suspicion.
“You read me right. That is the big favor. You are a natural, Buck.” Eve looked down and toyed with her small silica crystal paperweight.
“Eh..I hate to go against my boss, but you need to go too. You are selling yourself short. Need I remind you of your ability to sway me coming here instead of the other offers I had.”
“But the other companies will probably have their leading scientists come and doubtless they will bring their secretaries with their long flowing blonde or red hair, maybe wearing short skirts. Oh, sorry, Buck. That was judgmental of me, but I’m so plain.” Eve looked at a notepad on her desk and tore off the top sheet and crushed it, throwing it into her waste basket.
“Don’t talk about yourself that way. You are not plain, and you are assertive in a nice way. That is one of your many gifts.” Buck lightly tapped her shoulder.
