Deborah was the fourth Judge of Israel in Bible times. She freed Israel from oppression of the Canaanites.
Deborah was a judge and prophetess in Israel who lived around 1300 BC. It was a time when the Canaanites oppressed Israel such that they could not safely travel on the main roads. The Canaanite army captain, Sisera had the help of their 900 iron chariots.
Deborah enlisted Barak, the army captain of the Israelites to lead their army against the Canaanites, but he would not go unless Deborah went too. Her and Darak lead the Israelites into battle. With the help of God who caused a change in weather the enemy of Israel was defeated.
Excerpt
Deborah saw many Israelite soldiers lying dead also. She saw an arm move on one of the young men. She recognized from the color of his armor that he was from the tribe of Naphtali. She kneeled by his side and took his hand. Tears came to her eyes as she stared at his blood smeared face. A Canaanite sword had pierced his side.
“My Lady, Deborah. Thank you for being here.” He gasped and then muttered, his voice coming in painful quivers.
“I thank God for you and Captain Barak’s leadership. My thought of you inspired me to take down three of the enemy before one got me from behind.” He lifted his hand shakily.
Deborah with tears in her eyes, met his hand with both of hers.
“You fought well and helped set Israel free.” He smiled, seemingly at peace, his head moving slightly to one side. His eyes were still open, but he was gone. She reached down and gently eased his eyelids shut.
