A Leaf's Life
The air chilled with a cool autumn breeze that had a damp smell of soaked earth. The entire sky displayed a dark gray amongst the land, as if protecting all living things from the light of the sun. Not a soul was heard on this tranquil day… a day for which all things seemed to sleep.
Suddenly a swirl of wind shook an adjacent tree, causing a leaf to fall lifelessly to the ground. Too and fro with an occasional glide, the tumbling leaf took an eternity to land. Finally, as the golden leaf gently touched the earth, the real adventure began.
Detached, alone and exposed to the naked world, the leaf began its journey with yet another swirl of wind. Slowly but surely and inch by inch, in a rhythmic fashion, the once lifeless leaf now alive, walked the land. Not an enemy was known but a gardener's rack… something that could shorten the travels of the leaf. Yard after yard, the leaf stopped just briefly to glance around while absorbing the joy of being alive.
Life is short for a leaf, once severed from its mother, the tree. It may not travel but a few feet and if lucky, can pass a yard or two while experiencing many wonderful things the world can bring. With each step aided by the wind, it lures closer to its destined place where all leaves dwell. After a few seconds, the leaf disappeared from site into the unknown world, not knowing when its life would end.
One thing is for sure; the leaf was enjoying its life to the fullest for even God has a place for a leaf in the end. Not knowing where the leaf went was not my concern because; I knew where it would ultimately end up…
