Nov. 15, 1944
Dear Grace,
I don't know who owes who a letter. We were moving so much lately and sending mail was kind of hard. Now we stopped and are facing the enemy. I'm writing this from my little foxhole which is home for a while. I finally got to where I've wanted to be for a long time. Here, where I can give these Jerries my 2 cents worth.
The weather here is lousy. It's cold and rainy. Why, I even have cold running water in my foxhole. All the conveniences here, I'd say. Of course, I've changed my pink lace curtains for a shiny red curtain today. It brightens up the home a little.
I feel all right except for a slight cold that I've had since I hit France. This weather isn't helping out either. Oh, well, what more could a man ask for than the life of an Infantryman in the winter. Brr! I hate to think how cold it will be. Oh, well, it can't last much longer.
Tell the kids I said "Hello" and that I'll come to play my guitar for them someday soon. Then we'll have the old gang together and will make up for lost time. O.K.? Boy, I sure miss those rip-roaring parties. Wait until this is over and then boy will we have fun. We'll have a newcomer, too. Toby will be with me wherever I go. She's a swell kid!
