The true story of my journey from the early days as a Belfast poet to an emerging Australian songwriter at the end of the twentirth century .
The book is a true story of real life experiences that took place over four decades .
In a background of spinning mill stacks where trouble erupted upon the back streets of Belfast,
My Mother was cracking up and was desperate to get out of Belfast .
Each day I hid my identity as a poet , and concealed my poetry behind bookcases and under floorboards .
We were accepted by Australia House to emigrate to Australia in 1972 and were giver two weeks notice to pack our things and leave .In the hurry to leave I left behind my poetry .
I never settled in Australia and often returned to Belfast scattered and lost . Dur to the nightmare of drug addiction and quitting the habit it took thirteen years to straighted myself out . During this time as a songwriter I became very prolific writing hundreds of songs .
The Songwriter is a book about many of my experiences and the stories of those I met on the cold streets without pity .
Being homeless in places with no mercy or hope,
with no friends,
no job ,
no money .
Just a guitar and a song in my heart .

The last night I left Sheila home I was in tears as we stood at her gate . I turned my back from her and walked away . As I walked home along Etna Drive a sniper from the end of the street opened up with a semi-automatic weapon . I hit the deck and could feel the bullets skimming past my ears .
It was May 1972 and I started my first job in Australia .
Surrounded in a mist of poetry I found my way through the dark night of the soul .

The experience of a young adult trying to figure out what they want to do for employment or education can be overwhelming. My book will give them insight to what it means to be a carpenter. And the progress unions have made in discrimination.
