As the Lord brings back to my remembrance the woman who gave birth to a man child caught up into heaven, I begin to read about it in Revelation chapter twelve.
And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:
And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pain to be delivered.
And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth; and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.
And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.
And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days. Revelation 12:1-6
In this interesting chapter, you will see two wars taking place—one in heaven and one on earth. The whole chapter confirms the suffering and pain not only Israel will have to face, but the Church as well. How is that? Well, any reference to Israel is symbolic of the Church who like Israel in Deuteronomy 7:7-9 is called to be a holy nation, a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a peculiar people; that you should show forth the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light in I Peter 2:9. The Book of Galatians 3:7 declares that those who are of the faith are the seed of Abraham. Galatians 4:26 declares Israel is the mother of us all. Therefore, with that being said, we are family.
This chapter’s main focus is on Israel who gave Christ to the world through the virgin birth, the Church whose purpose is to give Christ to the world, as well as individual children of God who gives Christ to the world. And because of the witness of Jesus Christ, all who live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. The devil hates the witness of Christ in Israel, he hates the witness of Christ in the Church, and he hates the witness of Christ in you as an individual disciple of Christ. Therefore, he has nothing else to do but to act the fool throughout this whole chapter because he knows his time is short.
...and the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth to something so great and powerful in the earth. He went on a mission to try and abort God’s thought in the earth through her, seeking to destroy it. Know that the child represents Jesus. The Book of Matthew shows a likeness in which Herod sought to destroy Jesus because he felt threaten by His existence. Herod saw Jesus as a threat to his throne. When he couldn’t find him, he too became wroth that he ordered all children under age two destroyed. Herod was a form of a dragon blowing off hot steam. Herod failed to realize that Jesus was divinely appointed, whereas, Herod himself was human appointed.
When you are divinely appointed, nothing can stop what God has birthed in you from going forth. No one can stop what God has ordained in the earth. They can try, but they won’t succeed. Had Herod been walking in the Spirit, he would have understood that Jesus wasn’t out to take his position. Jesus came to fulfill His calling in the earth as Savior of the world. Just take a moment and think about the name of Jesus and all that it represents. Why is society so afraid of the name “Jesus?” Why is it so upsetting to some and liberating to others?
The name Jesus carries weight, authority, power, importance, and significance. Demons tremble at the name of Jesus. Anyone who is a disciple of Jesus and has the witness of Jesus in them, Christ abides in you and you in Him. Now take a moment to look at yourself. Do you even realize who you are and what you have in Christ? If so, why do you act powerless? You, being Christ’s in the earth carries a lot of weight. You have the same authority and power Christ has with the potential to do even greater works than He. As Christ is, so are you in this world (I John 4:17). You are important to His kingdom. And it scares the living daylights out of the kingdom of darkness because of the kingdom (Christ) in you to do the works that Jesus did in the earth. You can turn the world upside down right side up. You are a threat to the kingdom of darkness.
This woman, who represents the Church, you and I, is a threat to the kingdom of darkness. The fury of the enemy has gone forth as God prepares to birth something so awesome out of you, the individual and the Church. Man, woman, boy and girl, kings and priests, you are important to the kingdom. God gave you the keys to the kingdom in Matthew 16:19. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. You have the power of Christ in you to rule—the power of Christ in you to destroy the antichrist spirit in the earth. You have been authorized by a higher power to take dominion in the earth—the power to subdue. God commanded us through Adam and Eve to be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion in the earth. “I have given you the authority and power of Christ. I have given you the keys to the kingdom, GO!”
Look at verse three. “And there appeared another wonder in heaven: and behold a great red dragon.” The Hebrew word ‘dragon,’ rendered tannin refers to any great monster whether of land or the sea, being indeed more usually applied to some kind of serpent or reptile, but not limited to that meaning. Dragons can be found in:
1. the wilderness (Malachi 1:3),
2. deserted cities (Isaiah 13:22; Jeremiah 9:11)
3. and dry places (Isaiah 34:13; 43:20).
They are described as powerful and poisonous.
A dragon symbolizes destruction, evil, sin and paganism. The term ‘dragon’ relates to satan and the antichrist in the Book of Revelation. Dragon is illustrative of:
1. cruel and persecuting kings (Isaiah 27:1; 51:9: Ezekiel 29:3;
2. enemies of the church (Psalm 9:13),
3. wicked men (Psalm 44:19),
4. and the devil himself (Revelation 13:2; 20:2, 7). Please remember these descriptions as you continue reading this book.
Interestingly, Strong’s Concordance refers to dragon as a fabulous kind of serpent perhaps as supposed to fascinate, probably because it is variously represented and its characteristics and features. It is described as generally a bat-winged reptile with a crested head, terrible claws, and a barbed tail, often spouting fire and vapors. The term fascinate is known by a number of synonyms to include, charm, absorb, allure, beguile, entice, and put under a spell.
Let’s take a close look at this red dragon. The term ‘red’ is associated with energy, military might, danger, zeal, anger, strong feeling, war and power. Red is the color of blood and the picture of the carnage of war. The word “carnage” means massive slaughter; massacre. Here, Israel, the Church, and fellow disciples of Christ, may I introduce you to the dragon, known as your enemy, and satan who comes to war with you. He is your accuser 24-7, 365 days a year. He comes to hinder the work of God in you—the man child. He comes in many forms and disguises that it fools even some of the very elect who don’t even recognize him. Why do they not recognize him? It is because they are not walking in the Spirit. They are distracted and caught up in unimportant things. If they don’t take special care to crucify the works of the flesh then they will become instruments of the dragon (satan) in the earth causing havoc in the church and to their fellow sisters and brothers in Christ.
In the sixth verse you see God’s protection over this woman (Israel and the Church). God’s promises divine protection and security for His people in His Word. The beloved of the Lord shall dwell in safety by him; and the Lord shall cover him all the day long, and he shall dwell between his shoulders in Deuteronomy 33:12. The same God protects His Church, you and I, who are pregnant with a purpose and at any moment about to give birth. Although satan may be able to attack or persecute God’s people, he cannot harm us spiritually. No matter what you have to go through, God is with you as He was with the woman in this chapter.
Psalm 27:5, 6:
For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me, he shall set me up upon a rock.
And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the Lord.
Look at God’s gracious acts, His faithfulness, kindness, love and mercy in the history of Israel and see how He is so in control of any circumstance. Look at how he overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the RED sea and caused Israel to pass through. God reproved kings for their sake. When God says touch not mine anointed, He isn’t playing. Throughout this whole chapter, we can see how so in control God is when all else seems lost. When hell and the raging winds are beating up against you, God’s presence is with you.
God spoke to Israel in Isaiah 41:10-12 saying,
Fear thou not; for I am with thee; be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and they that strive with thee shall perish.
Thou shall see them, and shall not find them, even them that contended with thee: they that war against thee shall be as nothing, and as a thing of nought.
Sometimes we need to go back through the history of our lives and see what God has brought us through, singing this is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior for past victories won. If He did it before, He can do it again. All we need to do is praise Him in the song and in the dance.
As I look at Revelation 12:7 it reads, “And there was war in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels…” This verse brings back to memory a dream I had as a child....
