A Scoutmaster and his troop attempt to retrace the route of the 49ers across the Isthmus of Panama. The group gets lost and stumbles on the remains of three 49ers returning with their fortune in gold. The adventure takes a dramatic twist when a demented scoutmaster threatens the group.
Scoutmaster Dave Carson takes his seasoned Scouts on a 5-day hiking and camping trip on the Las Cruces Trail, retracing the route of the adventurers who crossed the Isthmus to California to hunt for gold. The group gets lost and stumbles on the remains of three murdered prospectors who had struck it rich. Their dead mules and a fortune in 50 lb gold ingots is laying among the remains. The problem is how to transport the gold out of the jungle and this is compounded by the presence of a demented Scouter who prowls the jungle lamenting the lost of his son and threatening anyone who gets in his way.

I was involved with the Boys Scouts in Panama for over 15 years. Based on all those years of Scouting experience, I have concocted a tale of mystery and intrigue involving composites of Scouters and Scouts I knew and have used Panama, especially the jungle, as a background. Wild Willie is a legend in Scouting lore and I relished using this character to add a bizzare twist to the tale of the Lost Souls. I recommend that this story be read while camping in the jungle, at night by a campfire, with unidentified noises from unseen creatures lurking in the dark.
