Alice gave her friend the grand tour of the building and talked of the rules to join. Steven agreed and became extremely excited at the fact of being the first new member.
Alice then informed him of an initiation and all happiness left his face.
“You never told me about that before,”
“Would you still come if I did?”
“Yeah, I guess so.” he answered with his head lowered.
“Okay, come on,” she said taking him by the hand.
Standing in the doorway of the dark room Alice pointed and said, “All you have to do is get my doll for me.”
With a confused look on his face he asked, “That’s it?”
“Yep, that’s it,” she answered with assurance.
“I’ll be right back.”
He picked up the doll and with a smile headed back toward Alice. The door slammed shut and he began to pound on it.
Alice grinned widely because she knew what came next.
The fortunate inherit riches, prestige, positive notoriety. Those not so lucky bear legacies filled with poverty, infamy or, worse yet, the unhinged insanity and murderous urges of their ancestors.
