This is now all that remains of the once infamous Mentone Springs. The Mentone Springs that have been in existence for years no longer run due to the error of man there is only a trickle of water now unfortunately. There were actually two springs in Mentone. The second spring, “Beauty Springs” is owned by Alex and Honey Glover.
Back many years ago when Highway 117 was being built there was blasting done on the side of the mountain. The best we know is that during this blasting a shift of the surface of the ground and its underlying sandstone crimped the black iron pipe used for the water to run was crushed leaving the springs to run no more.
The Mentone Springs owned by Dr. Frank J. Caldwell was used as a “healing springs”. Dr. Caldwell came to Mentone at first as a boarder in the house of the John Mason family following his first wife’s death and during that time he built the “Mineral Springs Hotel”. Dr. Caldwell felt strongly about the use of these “healing springs” as he felt their result as had John Mason who is considered the founder of Mentone.
